House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

Starting around 1929, America experienced this fascination with the idea of voodoo. And in July of 1932, a little pre-code film directed by Victor Halperin and starring Bela Lugosi, fresh from the grave as Dracula in the 1931 classic, was released to fairly boffo box office business and mostly mixed to negative critical assessment. This film is notable for a couple of reasons. Bela Lugosi plays a character with perhaps my favorite name in the history of cinema, “Murder Legendre.” With its scant 69-minute run time, it has the distinction of being the first full-length zombie picture ever made. About 60 years later, its title would be appropriated by one Robert Bartleh Cummings when he named his heavy metal band White Zombie. And of course, his nom de guerre in that band would be Rob Zombie.

Jennifer's Body (2009)

Jennifer's Body (2009)

I think Jennifer's Body rides a lot of lines. It's a little nostalgic in terms of its tone and its story. It's a little post-modern though in its execution. I think the characters reflect and refract one another. There's sort of a kind of “reverse menstruation” idea at work. And there's an exploitation of the fear of female or feminine power and empowerment. I think it's got a view of high school that's so saturated with meta-commentary that it seems like it has been made by a team of artists who probably barely survived high school and then really triumphed afterward.

Thirt13en Ghosts (2001)

Thirt13en Ghosts (2001)

I think what I appreciate most about this movie is that the filmmakers are clearly in love with what they're doing. And they even seem to be trying to create a unique mythology for this film. There are strict and binding ghost laws. They created the Arcanum, the book that all of the instructions come from. We get references to Basileus and a black zodiac of unholy archetypes. We get a phalanx of spirits who were created with sort of fairly elaboratelv detailed backstories. And we have the invention of the best infernal machine.
